We always love trying and styling items from the different brands we work with, but when I received a couple samples from the Baukjen SS14 collection it was an especially exiting surprise. Personally I’m relatively new to the brand, but was won over incredibly quickly after I got to know their basic but flattering shapes, gorgeous colour palettes, and luxurious fabric choices. It’s near impossible to find a brand that works for most women, but Baukjen is one of those rare gems that pays close attention to the female figure, and has managed to master simple-chic. It’s a winning combination of looking smart for work, sexy for going out, and secretly appreciating how incredibly comfortable their clothes are to wear.
So ladies, let me introduce you to the Ravenna Leather Skirt! It’s a hero piece from Baukjen’s latest collection and I’m confident it will swiftly become a hero piece in every working woman’s wardrobe. The beautiful pale pink shade is a favourite of mine – perfect for a soft feminine look on those sunny days – and it’s also made of the most gorgeous stretch leather that I’ve ever felt. It comes in black as well, so is not limited to the summery vibe if you’re just after a fail-safe pencil skirt.
The other Baukjen item I’ve fallen in love with is the Sardinia Shirt Dress. It works well paired with skinny jeans in the winter, bare legs when it’s a little warmer, and even thrown over your bikini for a beach-club look while on holiday. Another basic item delivered well by Baukjen, with two fun and flattering shades to choose from – Iris Blue and Lemongrass – and guaranteed comfort with their signature, softly woven fabric, it’s simply a must-have item that you’ll never tire of wearing or styling differently.
I recommend having a browse through the rest of their collection where you’ll find other simple but stunning pieces including playsuits, tailored trousers, and pretty prints. Visit the Baukjen website here.
The ‘ASOS Black’ range has given us some amazing party looks in recent years but now there’s a hot designer on hand to give this winter’s collection and your Christmas party looks some extra edge.
Markus Lupfer has joined forces with the internet fashion behemoth to create a capsule collection of sexy leather pieces with sultry navy aspects and shots of fiery orange with cool boxy tees and flattering skater shapes. Here’s our three favourite pieces from the collection.
While all eyes might be focused on the Maison Martin Margiela for H&M collaboration coming soon to a store near you, there’s another super exciting mash-up in town and it’s Marios Schwab for Debenhams.
Now while the likes of H&M and Topshop whip up a fashion furore with an amazing collaboration every so often, Debenhams has been doing it season after season and has recently added Preen to its books, as well as Marios Schwab, which needless to say is a welcome move, especially with Christmas party season fast approaching.
The good news is that with prices starting at £95, the collection manages to achieve that high street/high end balance – i.e. not compromising on edgy design or quality, but purse-friendly enough for most people to treat themselves.
The collection comprises 8 dresses and typically for Marios Schwab’s designs, they are figure-hugging with embellishments and statement panels, including sexy sheer panelling, studs and leather detailing. But WAG-tastic body-con this ain’t as the dresses are slim fitting and tailored rather than spray-on. And the best bit? Marios has signed up to give us another three collections with Debenhams- which is a Snap Fashion affiliate y’all.
Hello exciting designer/high street collaboration.William Tempest has designed a lush 13 piece collection for River Island as part of its ‘Design Forum’ that is the perfect mix of edgy sexy and cute.
Egyptian Mythology is the main inspiration but the pieces are versatile and will fit in nicely with the art deco, baroque and leather winter trends very nicely indeed. While River island has kindly released a first look teaser, the whole collection will debut in a short film at the London Fashion Week Fash/On film festival in September.
We’re excited about this one.
The high-street is full of amazing statement bags at the moment, and we went on a bit of a mission to find the best ones for you. Here are our top picks.
The peplum has been strutting its stuff on the catwalk for a couple of seasons now so you might as well give in and give this high-street friendly trend a go as it will be big this autumn and winter too.
I was going to be a bit of a fashion geek and head to the British Museum to prove that this trend has been around forever, (well, as long as the Ancient Greeks who loved a tunic gathered in at the waist -yes, even the men) but I will spare you, other than to mention that back when Dickens was writing the peplum was a popular riding jacket. So a new fad this ain’t.
And the peplum is amazing for accentuating feminine curves and creating a defined waist…but they can be tricky little blighters. The good news is that there is a peplum for all body shapes – you just need to pick where to pep and be prepared to try on quite a few- some will look grim – this is the shop’s fault and not yours!
Jason Wu put his peplum on the hips, which can look amazing on athletic or column-shaped girls, but not so flattering on anyone with already-curvy hips or thighs! Girls with inverted-triangle shaped bodies can get away with adding extra material to their hips or picking a waited peplum that is rather dramatic. However, there are lots of structured peplum tops and dresses on the high street, where the peplum accentuates the waist, which is far more flattering on most body shapes.
We love H&M and Topshop’s super sporty neoprene tops and have found that peplums with little material streamline the shape without adding bulk to the figure – plus they tick the sports luxe SS12 trend box. The fitted peplum is generally more flattering than its flouncy next-of-kin and teamed with a pencil skirt will create an amazing hourglass shape – great if you are an Apple shape looking to define your wait (add a belt for extra effect) or a pear shape looking to balance your top half with your curvier hips…or in fact an hourglass looking to ramp up your curve-appeal!
If you don’t fancy taking the peplum plunge, why not cheat a little with a skirt that flares out, like a relaxed fishtail shape? The peplum trend can add instant glamour and polish to your work wardrobe and isn’t as daunting as we first thought. Go on, give it a try?
