  1. NYFW Day 4/5: Celebrities turned designers

In case you haven’t noticed, we like to give you catwalk round-ups with a theme- and so far we’ve brought you symmetrical prints, vintage, fancy monochrome, pastels and florals and stripes.

Former pop stars, Victoria Beckham and Gwen Stefani showed off their collections at New York Fashion Week as well as celebrity stylist, Rachel Zoe.

Tapping into the sixties trend, Gwen Stefani kept hemlines short and sweet at L.A.M.B. with a tough baby doll look stealing the show. Although Gwen was MIA for the proceedings (preferring to stay in sunny L.A. – we don’t blame her!) it was still a rock and roll affair with plenty of black, quirky prints and pops of bright colour- particularly in accessories.  Amazing inspiration of how to pep-up everyday looks, the collection is super-wearable with leopard print dresses, stripy cardis and patterned capri pants plus shorts.

The dress everyone was talking about.

We know Victoria Beckham has expensive taste and her close-cut collection focused on clean lines and luxurious detailing.
Sophisticated dresses in navy and sable featured corset colour-block shapes as well as decorative seams. Perhaps taking tips from husband David Beckham, there was a strong sportswear influence too. The statement shift remains for Spring and box bags will earn their keep too- we love VB’s bright leather offerings.

Our favourite dress in the collection

Stylist to the stars, Rachel Zoe made her NYFW debut with another very wearable collection featuring strong prints on maxi dresses, tailored blazers and shorts, coupled with sheer feminine blouses.  Channelling this style (just like we we copied Nicole Richie’s boho style and Mischa Barton’s once laidback luxe, created by the stylist) we can have a little Zoe effect in our own wardrobes.

    Animal print - always.

Classic look sure to grace the red carpet - love the scalloped detail

  2. NYFW Day Three: Symmetrical prints

Symmetrical prints are nothing new (think Alexander McQueen’s stunning Plato’s Atlantis collection a couple of years ago) but thereare some seriously pretty examples on the runway, all with a fresh take on the theme.

Prabel Gurung’s naughty collection incorporated seductive purple florals, silky fabrics and slices of sheer netting showing tantalising glimpses of hips and thighs, or bodycon numbers with provocative slashes. According to Vogue, Gurung worked with Zana Bayne (who’s created clothes for Lady Gaga) to add fetish-inspired stilettos and harnesses to the collection.

    Elaborate detail preserves modesty

Jill Stewart’s beautifully simple collection was, in contrast, about colour and simple pattern. Vibrant tangerine was mixed with peach as well as several bright smoothie colours- lemon yellow and mint mixed with pale apricot. There was something tropical about the collection in colour as well as pattern, which reminded us a little of pineapples. (Maybe we’re still just a little obsessed after FNO?)

    Just peachy!

Alexander Wang had a very different approach to symmetrical style with masculine bomber jackets made out of sporty mesh and bright polo shirts, parachute shapes with plenty of drawstrings in muted colours and botanical prints. Then there were plenty of bright chevron detailed pieces on close-fitting jackets and leggings.

    Chevrons again!

Sporty and simple - a signature look

  3. NYFC: Charlotte Ronson

Charlotte Ronson referenced vintage shapes and prints from different decades with a hint of grunge for her cool catwalk show.

Perhaps as impressive as the designs was the celebrity turnout with plenty of a-listers on the front row. Check out Nylon TV’s catwalk coverage by Ronson’s mate, Peaches Geldof.

Our fav front row look- Louise Roe's dip dyed shirt dress and python clutch - a masterclass in cool.

  5. NYFW Day Two: Punchy Pastels + Flower Power

Has there ever been a spring collection without florals and pastels? I doubt it. Nevertheless, Peter Som has put a new spin on 60s flower power, while Jason Wu and Luca Luca showcased some super sweet pastel pieces.

Som’s bold florals came in acidic bright colours and were super-sized – not a ditsy print in sight. Florals were also made more modern with playful and structured shapes referencing the 60s and a fresh take on American sportswear.

Minimalist clean lines + bold florals + playful loafers = Spring sorted

Love the bikini with colour block blazer

Our favourite - bold and beautiful rose print dress

Sheer fabric, flowe sequins and the fringing trend gets a new lease of life

Jason Wu and Luca Luca showcased a confection of pastel prettiness. Alongside a perfect collection of mostly monochromatic pieces, Wu injected some colour with structured colour block pastel dresses and swimsuits.

    Peachy

In contrast, Raul Melgoza (the man behind the Luca Luca collection) referenced US artist Georgia O’Keefe for his floral influences as well as floaty bold pastels. There were some great casual silk blazers and blouses in soft berries, citrus and teal– perfect spring staples as well as dresses with playful polkadots.

    Very Berry

    Seriously bold blues

Pastel clash? Soft lime and sky blue cocktai

Dotty for polka dots - handy transitional trend?

  6. NYFW: Day One = sensational stripes

Ok, let’s not lie we’re not there sadly! But we’ve been studying the collections to give you a jolly good round-up. So we bring you the tale of Day One: colour + stripes in a sea of neutrals and greys.

Our favourite collection from day one was Richard Chai Love’s and it was sensationally stripy. Mixing loud prints- notably Hawaiian-style flowers and dense stripes plus bold orange and cobalt blue blocks, he also took a bold approach to shapes with retro-style short shorts under peplum shaped shirts plus body con shapes mixed with man-ish-shaped blazers.

One of our favourite bloggers, The Man Repeller, said the collection featured “some love for Beetlejuice and a kick back to Honolulu.” The models’make-up was pretty edgy too featuring neon washes of eye shadow and bright blue lips.

Love print - loud and proud!

    Tangerine dream!

    NEXT!

Sticking with stripes, BCBG Max Azria showed some seriously punchy colours, including more light tangerine (will this be a big
trend?) vivid turquoise and cobalt blue, plus various shades of yellow. The bright shades are used as colourful ‘blocks’ or as shocks of colour in chevron shapes and zigzags. The minimalist shapes and clean lines worked well with sheer flowing fabrics and looked seriously easy to wear- we predict copycat items on the high street next season!

    Beautiful in blue

    Chevrons keep it simple

Clever strap detail and that orange again

    And behold the zigzag!

There were plenty of other collections with the wow factor but these are our favourites – agree? x

  7. Alexa Chung chooses Miu Miu for NYFW

Alexa Chung can’t put a fashionable foot wrong – especially in Miu Miu’s glitter boots (check out our high street copycat versions!)

There are whispers that Chung might be teaming up with designer Cynthia Rowley on her new stateside fashion TV show but nobody really knows! In the mean time, we’ll be checking out what Alexa wears in the front row of New York Fashion Week and will keep you posted.
