  1. LFW: Day 3

I spent a good deal of day 3 preening and having an amazing time at the Topshop Unique Show but that didn’t mean that there wasn’t more fashion going on! Some of Britain’s biggest hitters showed their latest wares (or should that be wears) and my ‘must-have’ coat list is expanding at a frightening rate. It will be a real challenge to put a top 10 together this season! #FirstWorldProblems

    Flashes of red

Justin and Thea’s Preen collection was a little ‘polished punk’ (that’s my new phrase – don’t wear it out) and was reportedly influenced by a post-apocalyptic film called ‘Jubilee’, hence perhaps the slashes of red. Leather skirts had slits, kilts and biker jacked reigned supreme (a personal YES!) and studs and zips featured heavily- some pockets you could even zip right off. Handy. Holly Fulton’s show was also a teensy bit punk inspired but if course a lot of Art Deco featured too. There were lipstick dresses, love token prints, drop waists and lovely geometric cube-type patterns.

Topshop Unique also showcased plenty of patent red leather and scarlet patterned separates, but you’ll have to switch to our Topshop blog to read all about it! And Paul Smith clashed his deep reds with opulent deep pinks and rich plums for some beautiful tonal colour-blocking that looked fresh but refined.

    Check mate

Mulberry referenced the 1990s (which has been EVERYWHERE this fashion week) with skirt and trouser combos and textured checks…although the occasional woodland animal snuck in…thank goodness! It wouldn’t be Mulberry without them. Emilia Wickstead’s collection was similarly English but very prim and proper, as you’d expect. Plaid, pleats, impeccable tailoring and flared feminine shapes with occasional rose prints combined for a modern twist on heritage ladylike.

Temperley London channelled Hitchcock muse Tippi Hedren, which gave the collection a sexier, broodier mood than the super summery floral collection of this season (surprise surprise!)I loved the early sixties shapes and will have to invest in a pair of cats eye glasses.

     Pattern and print

In recent years London has emerged as the premiere fashion capital of print and day 3 was particularly prodigious on the print front. Temperley London and Vivienne Westwood gave us very different stripes. Jonathan Saunders’ show was typically restrained with a focus on beautiful colours and texture but there were also stripes too. Sexy but totally wearable, he told Vogue that it was all about womanhood, 1950s pin-ups ad Diana Dors. I adored the slightly jarring but muted colour palette and the underwear as outerwear details were just the right amount of naughty. It was incredibly sophisticated and provocative in a quiet but sexy way. LOVED it.

Print: Temperley London, Vivienne Westwood, Whistles and L’Wren Scott

High street favourite, Whistles, gave a presentation of its new collection for the first time at LFW and there were interesting camouflage-like patterns as well as lust-worthy leather separates. Arguably the contemporary queen of print, Mary Katrantzou, took a darker, more sophisticated and slightly sinister direction to her usually exuberant and fun prints, often composed of florals and unusual found objects. For this collection she was reportedly inspired by the black and white photography of Steichen, Clarence White and Alfred Stieglitz. But it wasn’t all about the print. Japanese origami shapes drew attention to the stark landscaped printed on the garments.

L’Wren Scott, who also showed at LFW for the first time, was inspired by artist Gustav Klimt and swirly lines defined her glamourous collection. Matthew Williamson injected some much needed winter sunshine into his collection and I picked out this delicious zigzag dress as one of my favourite pieces. Masculine tailoring and androgyny was the focus of Richard Nicoll’s show, which also featured zigzags, but in a furry way. There were also subtle florals and plenty of grey felt tailoring.

  2. Matthew Williamson designs first shoe collection

We have a new shoe crush and it’s thanks to Matthew Williamson. The designer who made floaty boho dresses a major fashion trend and dazzles us with his pretty prints has unveiled his first solo shoe collection and it’s awesome.

There are 12 pairs of shoes to collect (we wish!) in the collection, which celebrates 15 years of Williamson’s label. He’s collaborated with Joanne Stoker to produce the works of art for your feet.

There are flats, on-trend mide-heels and uber platforms- all super colourful with the heavy embellishment you expect from the designer. According to Vogue, his inspiration comes from India and the Holi festival, where people throw powder paint at each other and celebrate colour.

Judging by the collection, quirky heels are here to stay for next summer and we love the ‘bumpy’ platform soles and tie details. I can’t decide whether I like the black or the bright orange platforms best. Decisions, decisions…

    Super sunny

  3. LFW: A totally tropical taster

Despite having to contend with Autumnal showers, windy evenings and hot LFW show spaces, when it comes to summer, tropical prints and bright coloured beachwear are always popular. And SS13 will be no exception. The Caroline Charles show was a great start to our LFW and got us in that summery mind-set with tropical sarongs and bright bikinis. We saw heady tropical prints at Clements Ribeiro (mixed in with classic stripes) and tropical birds amongst palms at Issa London.

The holiday vibe continued at Mary Katrantzou, whose distinctive style incorporated exotic postage stamps and luggage labels, while Matthew Williamson looked to India for his inspiration and Moschino Cheap & Chic’s collection featured African-inspired prints alongside its quirky staples such as the super cute vinyl rain mac. Here’s some of our favourite looks that will have you reaching for a pina colada.

  4. LFW day 3/4: rainbow furs

Ok let’s address the obvious: fur. EEW. We hear that some of it is real and that’s just mean. While we wouldn’t buy any real fur at all we can’t deny that candy-coloured furriness (real or fake) was a trend on this year’s catwalk and we’re pretty sure it will run through to the high street – with fake look-a-like items available.

Matthew Williamson put fur collars on a number of his 1950s-style frocks and featured an eye-catching pale blue furry jacket. Peter Pilotto included rainbow-coloured fur (or furry) stoles and collars in their multi-coloured collection too. What’s your take on this controversial trend?

  5. Discovery Monday: Christmas craft fairs + The Floor Project

While we were shopping up a storm at Kingston-upon-Thames’ craft market, there was plenty of crafty mud-slinging going on in the press about the joy or disappointment of homemade Christmas gifts.

It was sparked by Twitter comments made about Kirstie Alsopp’s Homemade Christmas programme. The show featured some admittedly slightly dodgy handmade items (and a rather nauseating kids party) but it’s the thought that counts gift-wise– right? – and it’s nice to get something unique for Christmas.

So while we’re not about to whip up our own snow domes or attempt a woollen jumper (believe us – no-one would want them- although our CTO is handy in the kitchen) we like supporting crafty people, especially fledgling fashion designers. Plus the craft fair Christmas shopping experience is more pleasant than running the shopping gauntlet in Westfield!

Were huge fans of Folksy (the British version of Etsy) and I visited professional print designer, Folksy dealer and friend Chloe Taylor’s stand at my local Christmas market. Great Christmas gifts guaranteed! (pics below)

But as well as Folksie we have also just discovered The Shop Floor Project, which offers an array of textiles, scarves, t-shirts and home stuff (favoured by Vogue) made by designers and artists. Some items are obviously pricey but others are surprisingly affordable – yay!

P.S. There is also free postage for items from The Shop Floor Project until 12 December.

  6. Closet Collage … love!

We’re on Tumbr (at last) so if you can’t get enough of us you can follow us there too for our personal fashion loves and random pictorial inspiration… http://snapfashion.tumblr.com/

And while we were looking around we discovered ‘closet collage’ which is pretty amazing. We absolutely love the collages of Erdem and Matthew Williamson’s floral inspired SS12 collections.

  7. Celebrity trend: Wear S/S12 NOW!

…No we don’t mean wearing flip flops in winter (but shorts are fine!)

We were glued to the S/S12 fashion weeks and got incredibly excited at the prospect of floral prints, pretty pastels, crisp white dresses, seaside and underwater-inspired collections and so much more…but then got back to the business of dressing for this season.

But now so on planet celebrity where it counts to be ‘first’ (and Hollywood is very probably quite a lot hotter than London!)

We got so excited when we spotted Sienna Miller wearing Matthew Williamson just a couple of weeks after London Fashion Week but The Telegraph has surpassed us by spotting plenty more famous folks wearing next season’s collections…Burberry, Jil Sander, Prabal Gurung, Jason Wu, Calvin Klein, Mary Katrantzou and Christian Dior.

  8. Best-dressed celebs: Sienna Miller, Pippa Middleton + more

The celebs were out in force for the All Saints Breakthrough Breast Cancer party, which apart from raising a lot of money and awareness, saw a lot of stylish celebrities out in force.

Sienna Miller stole the show in a feathery Matthew Williamson dress hot off the catwalk, with Pippa Middleton not far behind in a silk gown by Dannii Minogue’s dress label, Project D. Scroll down for Gemma Arterton, Poppy Delevingne and Tali Lennox.

  9. Sienna Miller wears Matthew Williamson S/S12

It was only last month that Matthew Williamson showed off his new collection at London Fashion Week and this is the first time we’ve seen it in the wild.

Sienna Miller wore a stunning feathery dress for the All Saints Breakthrough Breast Cancer Party … guess it helps when one of your best friends designed it in getting your hands on a catwalk look first-  but we love the dress anyway – even if it isn’t Spring yet!
