  1. LFW: Day 3

I spent a good deal of day 3 preening and having an amazing time at the Topshop Unique Show but that didn’t mean that there wasn’t more fashion going on! Some of Britain’s biggest hitters showed their latest wares (or should that be wears) and my ‘must-have’ coat list is expanding at a frightening rate. It will be a real challenge to put a top 10 together this season! #FirstWorldProblems

    Flashes of red

Justin and Thea’s Preen collection was a little ‘polished punk’ (that’s my new phrase – don’t wear it out) and was reportedly influenced by a post-apocalyptic film called ‘Jubilee’, hence perhaps the slashes of red. Leather skirts had slits, kilts and biker jacked reigned supreme (a personal YES!) and studs and zips featured heavily- some pockets you could even zip right off. Handy. Holly Fulton’s show was also a teensy bit punk inspired but if course a lot of Art Deco featured too. There were lipstick dresses, love token prints, drop waists and lovely geometric cube-type patterns.

Topshop Unique also showcased plenty of patent red leather and scarlet patterned separates, but you’ll have to switch to our Topshop blog to read all about it! And Paul Smith clashed his deep reds with opulent deep pinks and rich plums for some beautiful tonal colour-blocking that looked fresh but refined.

    Check mate

Mulberry referenced the 1990s (which has been EVERYWHERE this fashion week) with skirt and trouser combos and textured checks…although the occasional woodland animal snuck in…thank goodness! It wouldn’t be Mulberry without them. Emilia Wickstead’s collection was similarly English but very prim and proper, as you’d expect. Plaid, pleats, impeccable tailoring and flared feminine shapes with occasional rose prints combined for a modern twist on heritage ladylike.

Temperley London channelled Hitchcock muse Tippi Hedren, which gave the collection a sexier, broodier mood than the super summery floral collection of this season (surprise surprise!)I loved the early sixties shapes and will have to invest in a pair of cats eye glasses.

     Pattern and print

In recent years London has emerged as the premiere fashion capital of print and day 3 was particularly prodigious on the print front. Temperley London and Vivienne Westwood gave us very different stripes. Jonathan Saunders’ show was typically restrained with a focus on beautiful colours and texture but there were also stripes too. Sexy but totally wearable, he told Vogue that it was all about womanhood, 1950s pin-ups ad Diana Dors. I adored the slightly jarring but muted colour palette and the underwear as outerwear details were just the right amount of naughty. It was incredibly sophisticated and provocative in a quiet but sexy way. LOVED it.

Print: Temperley London, Vivienne Westwood, Whistles and L’Wren Scott

High street favourite, Whistles, gave a presentation of its new collection for the first time at LFW and there were interesting camouflage-like patterns as well as lust-worthy leather separates. Arguably the contemporary queen of print, Mary Katrantzou, took a darker, more sophisticated and slightly sinister direction to her usually exuberant and fun prints, often composed of florals and unusual found objects. For this collection she was reportedly inspired by the black and white photography of Steichen, Clarence White and Alfred Stieglitz. But it wasn’t all about the print. Japanese origami shapes drew attention to the stark landscaped printed on the garments.

L’Wren Scott, who also showed at LFW for the first time, was inspired by artist Gustav Klimt and swirly lines defined her glamourous collection. Matthew Williamson injected some much needed winter sunshine into his collection and I picked out this delicious zigzag dress as one of my favourite pieces. Masculine tailoring and androgyny was the focus of Richard Nicoll’s show, which also featured zigzags, but in a furry way. There were also subtle florals and plenty of grey felt tailoring.

  2. Top 5 best dressed: People’s Choice Awards

The starlets were out for the People’s Choice Awards and the unofficial dress code seemed to be neon – now!

I’m not sure that we’ve ever had Paris Hilton in our ‘top 5 best dressed’ feature before but she looked great in a Mary Katrantzou dress (although pointy courts would have been my choice over heavy platforms). Joining the bright print club was Emma Watson who wowed in Peter Pilotto.

We adored Lea Michele’s fresh neon lace look in Elie Saab and Chloe Moretz’s eye-popping Simone Rocha floral number.

Taylor Swift chose to forgo brights and a short hemline by wearing an incredibly elegant dress by Ralph Lauren Collections – notably not accessorised with Harry Styles. After all, his slightly grungy tattooed boy band look would have clashed and that just wouldn’t do.

  3. LFW: A totally tropical taster

Despite having to contend with Autumnal showers, windy evenings and hot LFW show spaces, when it comes to summer, tropical prints and bright coloured beachwear are always popular. And SS13 will be no exception. The Caroline Charles show was a great start to our LFW and got us in that summery mind-set with tropical sarongs and bright bikinis. We saw heady tropical prints at Clements Ribeiro (mixed in with classic stripes) and tropical birds amongst palms at Issa London.

The holiday vibe continued at Mary Katrantzou, whose distinctive style incorporated exotic postage stamps and luggage labels, while Matthew Williamson looked to India for his inspiration and Moschino Cheap & Chic’s collection featured African-inspired prints alongside its quirky staples such as the super cute vinyl rain mac. Here’s some of our favourite looks that will have you reaching for a pina colada.

  4. Get the Mary Katrantzou fish print look!

Miss out on the Mary Katrantzou Topshop drop?  The good news is that Katrantzou-inspired prints are everywhere.

Primark and ASOS have picked out the underwater print ideas rather than the much-copied-already digital florals. While we would LOVE the real thing, we think this dress from Primark is a steal (the price eludes us but it probably won’t cost more than £25) and we adore this fishy laptop case. We reckon with a little DIY it could make a rather eye-catching clutch.

Obviously you don’t get the designer craftmanship like you do with a Katrantzou orignial (it’s breathtaking) but for some summer fun these fishy prints are fantastic.

  5. LFW Day5: Mary Katrantzou vs Holly Fulton + power prints

I am a Mary Katrantzou nut and in fact a bit of a digital print fanatic so bring on the detail!

Last season was all about flowers for Mary K but for winter she has composed her trademark incredible prints with everyday objects (watches, bows, hangers, mazes, typewriters, phones…) grouped in strong colours with the usual clever use of symmetry. We particularly like the witty pencil skirt with pencils on it – genius – and better still the work was executed by Chanel’s couture embroiderers Lesage…quite a coup for the young designer, non?

What can we say? The prints are inspired and the cutting exquisitely creative. Just enjoy x

    A riot of colour

    Super pretty!

And so to another with a penchant for print. Holly Fulton is best known for her Art Deco inspired pieces but she has opted for hot pink and bright turquoise in the winter (of course) with inspiration from Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Miami Art Deco buildings apparently. Then of course there were black lines everywhere – Fulton’s trademark – and plenty of sleek lines.

But unlike previous collections there was extra embellishment and even a little William Morris-like detailing, giving what fashion editors think is a new kind of sophistication and I agree- especially the less lurid, more monochrome pieces, which I love.

  6. Floral blazers for all budgets

Everyone knows that it’s all about floral prints this spring – preferably clashed with other prints – and a floral blazer is a great way to work the look with jeans (preferably pastel) or in the office. So we’ve picked out three of the best all inspired by Mary Katrantzou’s original SS12 masterpiece.

Straight off the catwalk and almost priceless!

  7. Elle Style Awards: seductive sheer vs playful print

Thank goodness for the Elle Style Awards. We’ve been struggling all week to find amazing red carpet looks for you, despite the Grammys and Baftas both coming around. But finally we have some styles that are original and fun as well as super glamourous.

Plenty of people have gone gaga for Alexa Chung’s trouser suit but (I’m being super brave here) despite loving Alexa and Stella McCartney, who designed the suit, it kind of left me cold…too sensible perhaps?

So instead we bring you the sheer and seductive versus the playful print. Whose team are you on?
