  1. Fashion inspiration for a rainy day

It’s a horrible day in grey London. The rain’s lashing down and I’ve already had to lay one umbrella to rest after battling the elements on a dash to get some eggs…nothing will stand between a Snap Fashion girl and cake baking!

So while my hair is all over the place and my handbag sodden, here’s some inspiration (yes of course there’s lots of Burberry) of how to look fabulous in the rain…or at least how to embrace it, as it looks like it’s here to stay for the weekend!

  2. The Great Gatsby + Prada= great costumes

As soon as we heard who would be starring in The Great Gastsby film directed by Baz Luhrmann we got excited about the costumes. Then we heard that Cartier and Miuccia Prada were involved and got VERY excited. Now we’ve seen Miuccia’s sketches and can’t wait to get to the cinema!

While we’ll have to wait until May to see the film but in the mean time, check out these sketches and the awesome trailer. There are 40 dresses in the film (we might play dress bingo) all of which were adapted from past Prada and Miu Miu colections all with an Art Deco twist – obviously.

The film’s costume designer, (who is also Baz’s wife) told The Telegraph: “Baz and Miuccia have always connected on their shared fascination with finding modern ways of releasing classic and historical references from the shackles of the past.”

The stylish duo worked together to create costumes with “the European flair that was emerging amongst the aristocratic East Coast crowds in the 1920s” to capture the “dichotomy between those who aspired to the privileged, Ivy League look of wealthy Long Island and those who were aspiring to European glamour, sophistication and decadence.” Oh yeah.

We love Carey Mulligan (Daisy’s) gold, crystal-encrusted ball gown in particular. And Baz was sure there would be show-stopping dresses as he’s worked with Miuccia before – remember the super stylish Romeo & Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio in 1996? The pair have also made a few short films together for the Met’s pedigree ‘Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations’ exhibition.

Are you as excited as us about the fothcoming film?

    My favourite!

The 1920′s produced the most elegant cocktail dresses. Discuss.

Not my kinda thing but I have sketching envy!

  5. Fierce and furry fashion coat monsters

We can think of nothing cosier and more fun than a bright furry coat to keep us warm this chilly January. Now we’re not talking Cruella Devillie’s REAL and exotic furs – tis not the season to skin live cute animals – but the fake and ethical variety looks pretty amazing.

Mulberry brought monsters to the AW12 catwalk referencing the wonderful Where The Wild Things Are and there are some great furry gilets on the high street. Why not team a shaggy coat with skinny jeans and a gothic-style scarf for Kate Moss style chic or throw on a bright furry coat over your party dress for a rock and roll take on glamour?

If you don’t fancy taking on this monster trend (or Sesame Street chic inspired by BluMarine), try a statement furry scarf or collar, which Peter Pilotto made us swoon over on their colourful catwalk. We loved Vogue’s December issue with its epic Pop Art feature, which included a fun take on fur coats.

If like us you’re slightly crazy for a zigzag furry coat by Mulberry but have spent all your money on Christmas presents why not give our app a whirl. Just download Snap Fashion from the iTunes App Store, take a photo of the expensive coat and our super technology will find you the real deal and/or look-a-likes to suit your budget in seconds. Go and give it a try- you can even track sale prices to make sure you get the best bargains around!

Big Bird was Blumarine’s furry inspiration, maybe?!

For a toned-down take on Blumarine, try Topshop’s striking £250 bomber jacket with bright orange undertones

If you don’t have a Mulberry furry gilet, hug a monster like Lindsey Wixson

Amazing patchwork coat from Chelsea Girl just £55

We adore this pink rock and roll furry jacket from Miss Selfridge – Just £65 and would look equally amazing with jeans and glitzy Christmas dress

We loved Vogue’s colourful furry feature from its ‘Pop’ December edition

  7. Alexa Chung to turn style writer

It was a matter of time until a book was written about Alexa Chung’s distinctive style and the good news that it will be written by the model/presenter/BFC ambassador/contributing editor to Vogue/plimsoll collaborator/the list goes on… herself.

The news comes after Alexa said that she is working on her own fashion label, having collaborated with numerous brands so far. While I’m excited about that, I’m really stoked about the book, which although without a title, promises to give readers an “unparalleled chance to enter Alexa’s world and search for inspiration”, according to The Telegraph.

Detailing how she decides what to put together, her style influences (we might be able to guess a few of those!) styling tips, plus Chung’s photos and drawings, it’s bound to be a big seller. I admit to being a little obsessed with fashion books recently and blame my new-found addiction on the bookshop at London Fashion Weekend and the Coverteur blog.

The only bad news is that there’s no point putting this read on your Christmas list (yes, we have started one!) as it’s due to be published in September next year.

  8. Victoria Beckham brings flares back

We’ve lost count of the times that we’ve been told that skinny jeans are due to be replaced by flares/wide trousers/anything else, but maybe that will be about to change for real as trend setter Victoria Beckham has been spotted out and about in indigo wash flares. I love her glam-meets-casual look and am a sucker for the seventies, especially having gone gaga for Hedi Slimane’s Saint Laurent collection at PFW- so I’m sold! Who’s jumping on the flared bandwagon with me?

  9. Style Crush: Joni Mitchell

Taylor Swift is set to play Canadian folk legend Joni Mitchell  in a new film called Girls Like Us. It’s about three of the sixties’ biggest and best singers, Carole King, Carly Simon and Joni and I’m beyond excited. So to celebrate, let’s celebrate Joni Mitchell’s style- which was almost as brilliant as her voice!

  10. StyleCrush: David Bowie

You know how excited we are about Chanel’s Little Black Jacket exhibition? Well we’re even more stoked about the V&A’s ‘David Bowie is’ retrospective, with a little help from Gucci. Bowie, like Madonna has rocked every trend and made trouser suits, lightning bolts and so much more completely iconic. It’s testimony to the man that Kate Moss has tried to steal his style!

The phrase that’s got me salivating is ‘unprecedented access’ to personal items, artwork, written lyrics, photos, films, instruments, costumes and yes, fashion. Readers, this is a whole day out for me and I might have to go back many, many times once the exhibition opens in 23 March…after all, there’s a lot to see -300+ items- *squee!*

Sooo….costumes. We’re excited about the Ziggy Stardust bodysuits by Freddie Burretti, hopefully some linen suits and blue shoes, Kansai Yamamoto’s Aladdin Sane designs and some patriotic McQueen, (always). And think of the photos!

Gucci’s Creative Director, Frida Giannini, told press: David Bowie is… one of my greatest inspirations His individuality, originality and authenticity have been defining. Through his creative genius his influence on music, fashion, art and popular culture over decades has been immeasurable and will continue to be for decades to come.” We totally agree.
