  1. The Great Gatsby + Prada= great costumes

As soon as we heard who would be starring in The Great Gastsby film directed by Baz Luhrmann we got excited about the costumes. Then we heard that Cartier and Miuccia Prada were involved and got VERY excited. Now we’ve seen Miuccia’s sketches and can’t wait to get to the cinema!

While we’ll have to wait until May to see the film but in the mean time, check out these sketches and the awesome trailer. There are 40 dresses in the film (we might play dress bingo) all of which were adapted from past Prada and Miu Miu colections all with an Art Deco twist – obviously.

The film’s costume designer, (who is also Baz’s wife) told The Telegraph: “Baz and Miuccia have always connected on their shared fascination with finding modern ways of releasing classic and historical references from the shackles of the past.”

The stylish duo worked together to create costumes with “the European flair that was emerging amongst the aristocratic East Coast crowds in the 1920s” to capture the “dichotomy between those who aspired to the privileged, Ivy League look of wealthy Long Island and those who were aspiring to European glamour, sophistication and decadence.” Oh yeah.

We love Carey Mulligan (Daisy’s) gold, crystal-encrusted ball gown in particular. And Baz was sure there would be show-stopping dresses as he’s worked with Miuccia before – remember the super stylish Romeo & Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio in 1996? The pair have also made a few short films together for the Met’s pedigree ‘Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations’ exhibition.

Are you as excited as us about the fothcoming film?

    My favourite!

The 1920′s produced the most elegant cocktail dresses. Discuss.

Not my kinda thing but I have sketching envy!

  2. The Carrie Diaries- What do you think?

If you’re of a certain generation (still quite young but getting on) chances are that you were a tad obsessed with Sex and the City…when you almost believed that journalists were paid loads of money, men were an endless supply of free drinks and apartments grow and have tardis-like proportions.

But now there’s a new kid on the block with Anna Sophie Robb playing the young Carrie Bradshaw, set in 1984. So Carries’s in High School (we smell Gossip Girl-esque dramas) and wears eighties clothing. We think that the new show starts in the US tonight and we can’t wait to read the spoilers and start seeing the outfits.

    New Carrie?

The story, according to Vogue, goes like this…Carries goes back to school following the death of her mother and shies away from friends, boys and fashion. She heads to (you’ve guessed it) New York for an internship and a change of scenery. There she falls in love with the city and fashion party scene and makes the tricky choice of starting over or going back to her old life…and all in just one bite-sized episode!

I’m quite excited to see what will happen in the new series  and reckon it might turn a whole new generation on to SATC but for me, part of the appeal of the original series was the age of the characters and the fashion. The 1980s and teen dream just might not do it for me – thoughts?!

  3. Get a piece of Ab Fab Patsy Stone’s wardrobe!

Patsy Stone is one of our favourite characters ever and the Snap Fashion team has watched every episode of Absolutely Fabulous ever. So we are definitely interested in snapping up a piece of the bolly-swigging, chain-smoking, friend-abusing fictional fashion editor’s wardrobe, which goes to auction tomorrow on 13 November.

Joanna Lumley, who (of course!) plays Patsy in Ab Fab, will auction 50 items from her wardrobe in aid of The Prince’s Trust and lots will include Patsy’s pieces (a Dolce & Gabbana pinstriped jacket, houndstooth trous by Costume National, leather skirt (natch) and McQueen vest top,) as well as costumes from The New Avengers and personal items such as the pink Chanel suit she wore to lobby for the Gurkhas- trust Joanna to make politics fashionable.

She told the press: “I am giving up some of my greatest treasures and happiest memories. I am so thrilled to think that the proceeds will all go to benefit young people through one of my all-time favourite charities – The Prince’s Trust. I love each item and each garment with a passion.”

If you’d like a piece of the fashion action, be sure to visit the auction on 13 November. There’s more info at: kerrytaylorauctions.com

Perhaps French actress Marion Cotillard will be interested after she has revealed she is a massive Ab Fab fan in a recent Harper’s interview. Check out her Amazing photos!

  4. Girls on Film: Natalie Portman to play Jackie O

O-M-G (or should that be Jackie-O—M-G) Natalie Portman is set to play the legendary First Lady of John F Kennedy, Jackie Onassis and we are unbelievably excited!

Will there be a pink Chanel suit? Pillbox hats? Who will play John? Who will do the costumes? Will her style catch-on again on the high street?

While these are are possibilities (I really hope!) I feel kind-of bad for mentioning them seeing as the film, called Jackie, will apparently detail Jackie’s story following the assassination of the President.

Of course Natalie Portman is an incredible actress and will no doubt do an amazing job of depicting one of the world’s most famous (and saddest) stories of the death of a political giant.

Natalie as Jackie? We can’t wait

Natalie is also pretty stylish herself and is currently smouldering in the vintage-style Dior My Cherie adverts. Katie Holmes was the last A-lister I can think of who played Jackie (and I thought she was pretty good, despite the critics panning The Kennedys series) and I also recommend Bobby, which has more Hollywood names and awesome outfits in it that you can shake a stick at…yes, even LiLo.

With the news that Taylor Swift (who btw is dating a Kennedy) is set to play another amazing leading lady from the world of music, which film are you more excited about?

  5. Style Crush: Joni Mitchell

Taylor Swift is set to play Canadian folk legend Joni Mitchell  in a new film called Girls Like Us. It’s about three of the sixties’ biggest and best singers, Carole King, Carly Simon and Joni and I’m beyond excited. So to celebrate, let’s celebrate Joni Mitchell’s style- which was almost as brilliant as her voice!

  6. Kristen Stewart: the beat goes on

It’s easy to forget how young Kristen Stewart is. She seems to have been around forever with Twilight, her long-term relationship, mature way of handling the press, defined sense of style and now the whole ‘affair’ thing. And woah she looks sophisticated in this Vogue editorial (we do like it!).

Kristen has a knack for vamping it up in the red carpet, but I can’t wait to see her in ‘On the Road’ this Autumn where she will have to look much younger and more natural! Plus it’s one of my favourite ever books. Has there ever been a cooler movement than the Beats?

  7. Girls on Film: MTV House of Style goes online

Back in the late eighties and early nineties the internet was a rarity/luxury and here in the UK, a lot of people didn’t have satellite so were either addicted to MTV or just envied their friends. We fall into the second camp and so are thrilled that iconic fashion show MTV House of Style is now online for us to catch up on (decades later). We like playing spot the super model.

    Super Squee!

  8. Girls on Film: Melissa Joan Hart as Clarissa

Oh the nineties- Dr Marten boots, leggings, clashing prints, tie dye, Keith Haring, denim jackets, printed jeans and big pendant necklaces…on wait, that’s kinda like ‘now’ too. So perhaps it is time to resurrect a former fashion hero of ours –Melissa Joan Hart as Clarissa Darling (you know the tune if you’re a child/teen of the nineties!)

A word of caution – some of these looks are probably a little too much but aside from Kate Moss and various cool indie chicks, I think Clarissa is one of the decade’s (less appreciated) icons.
